Magnificence in Malibu

A classic California beach house with extraordinary architectural details flourishes on 7 acres in the exclusive enclave of Malibu.

More than three quarters of a century ago, the 45,000 acres that comprise Malibu, Calif., belonged to just one family. In 1929, the same year that our country faced the beginning of the Great Depression, those acres reluctantly were opened up to the public by the Rindge family. It is perhaps fortunate for today's residents that those permitted to rent land parcels and then ultimately purchase them nine years later were a privileged few, many of them celebrities, because in the ensuing years, Malibu has retained its exclusivity and fiercely select nature. With a guard gate protecting them from the world outside, its inhabitants insist on privacy, which frequently seems like an impossible dream due to their celebrity status.

With a 27-mile coastline, Malibu has been called "utopia" and is famous for its warm, sandy beaches. The 7 acres comprising the lovely estate for sale along the Pacific Coast Highway are located on a bluff that provides a stunning view of the Pacific Ocean. Built in 1980, the 15,000-square-foot main house has seven bedrooms and 11 bathrooms.
